The Rise and Fall of Ryan Leaf

It seems like Ryan Leaf finally has hit rock bottom…Former West Texas A&M University coach Ryan Leaf is indicted today by a Randall County Grand Jury. Leaf was indicted on 7 counts of Obtaining a Controlled Substance By Fraud, 1 count of Burglary Of A Habitation, and 1 count of Delivery Of A Controlled Substance. The Randall County District Attorney’s office say the dates of these charges span from January of 2008 through last October.

After a great career at Washington State in which he was a Heisman Trophy Candidate, Leaf was drafted # 2 overall in the 1998 NFL Draft. Of course drafted first was all world Peyton Manning. The disaster that was the Leaf pick by the Chargers is only amplified due to the fact San Diego gave up two first-round picks, a second-round pick, linebacker Patrick Sapp and Eric Metcalf, to the Cardinals to move up one pick to ensure they got 1 of the 2 QBs.

Quick note to all Colts Fans…Imagine This

“I’m looking forward to a 15 year career, a couple of trips to the Super Bowl, and a parade through downtown San Diego.” Said Leaf after the draft.

If only the poor guy really knew what was in store for him. Come to think of it, he did know what he was getting into, because he dropped all the shit on himself.

Starting with missing the Rookie Symposium and being fined. But his rookie year started out pretty good as he won his first 2 games. Game 3 marked a decline of epic proportion. He completed 1 pass for 4 yards against the Chiefs, and benched after 9 games after only throwing for 2 TDs. He was replaced by the mighty Craig Whelihan.

His Rookie Year Stat Line : in 10 games 9 started…

2 Tds, 15 INTs, only passed for a total of 1,289 yards, with a 45.3 percent completion rate. QB rating = 39.0

“Just fucking don’t talk to me, all right! Knock it off!” Really? Ryan, are you kidding me?

This guy is such a loser…and a Dickhead. He reportedly lied to coaches about a wrist injury so he can go play golf. Whether true or not, a video eventually came to light of Leaf playing flag football while he was supposed to be rehabbing his shoulder, which held him out of his second season, and “wrist”.

After the Chargers filed a grievance against him for conduct detrimental to the team, he still came back for the 2000 season. He only lasted a few games, but backup QB Moses Moreno, busted his knee and in came Leaf. This time Leaf really did hurt his wrist and missed 4 games. Finally San Diego came to their senses and released the biggest draft bust in the history of the NFL.

After brief stints with the Buccaneers, Cowboys, and Seahawks, Ryan Leaf’s trainwreck NFL career came to a end. He completed 315 of 655 passes for 3,666 yards, with 14 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. Leaf’s career passer rating was 50.0.

He finally started to get his life back on track as he became West Texas A & M’s Quarterbacks Coach in 2006, and the school’s golf coach in 2007. ”I feel very honored to be a part of Coach Carthel’s staff and a part of an up-and-coming successful program. [...] About a year after I retired from playing, I decided that I wanted to get back to college, where I had the greatest time of my life, and to get involved with college football.”

But the hits keep on coming. On November 5, 2008, Leaf was put on leave from his coaching position at West Texas A & M for allegedly asking one of his players for a pill to help him deal with pain in his wrist.
