Contract talks between the Eagles and Jeremy Maclin heated up yesterday afternoon, according to a high-ranking team official familiar with the negotiations. The team official said that although little significant progress was made, the Eagles were encouraged by the fact that at least communication with Maclin’s agent picked up. Maclin, the 19th pick in the draft, has missed the first five practices of training camp at Lehigh and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said the missed time could be costly for Maclin, a wide receiver out of Missouri.

“I’d normally talk about the players that are here,” Mornhinweg said. “However, in general, it’s my experience with rookies that help a ball club – or helped the club that I’ve been on – they’ve missed very, very little. It’s just a big advantage to be at every practice.”

Sheldon Brown, after skipping the team’s voluntary camp last month and declaring his dissatisfaction with his contract before that, was among yesterday’s arrivals.

“Everybody knows how I feel, so there’s really no need to talk about it,” Brown said. “I’m here and I’m going to do what I’ve always done. I’m a great teammate. I play hard, I practice hard, and I try not to miss any time. I’m going to give you what I’ve got.”

Brown said he never considered holding out of training camp, and made the Eagles aware that he would be here by sending coach Andy Reid a text message a few days ago.

Look for the Eagles to place running back Brian Westbrook and defensive end Victor Abiamiri on the active physically unable to perform (PUP) list today. It’s simply a precautionary measure in the event the two injured players remain sidelined longer than anticipated. Westbrook, who is recovering from June surgery to remove two bone spurs from his right ankle, and Abiamiri, who strained a pectoral muscle lifting weights earlier this month, are both expected back by the middle of next month, according to coach Andy Reid.
