Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew has been splitting out wide at receiver at times during practice. The Jaguars are using some plays to get the ball in Jones-Drew’s hands in space, allowing him to help minimize the hits he takes and keep him fresher longer. ‘The total volume (of plays) maybe will go up a little bit for Maurice, but we’ve already had him very involved,’ head coach Jack Del Rio said.

Titans WR Kenny Britt has been on the PUP list with a hamstring injury since signing his contract last weekend and has yet to practice in training camp. Britt won’t play in Sunday’s preseason opener against the Bills.

Coach Fisher said, “He is handling the workload and has responded to what we are doing,” Fisher said. “We feel like based on what we have seen so far timing-wise it will all fall into place for him next week.’’

Britt is expected to be ready for the second preseason game, on Aug. 15 against Tampa Bay at LP Field.

“I am really anxious to be out here with the team, to get the feel of it,” Britt said. “It’s a little disappointing because it’s the first preseason game and my first NFL team and I’d like to be out there with my teammates. But right now I just need to get in the playbook and learn the plays.’’

Packers running back Ryan Grant can’t wait to play in front of a crowd at Lambeau Field on Saturday night. A healthy Grant has a full camp to prepare this year. He hopes to recapture the form he showed during a breakout 2007 season – and the scrimmage is a good place to start.

“I’m definitely playing hard,” Grant said Thursday. “Once they say live, you’ve got to go hard.” “I think Ryan has had a very solid camp,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “It’s really our first time going through a full camp with Ryan. “We get better every day. I talk about the philosophy to the offense, you need to be strong up the middle, and the only way to get strong up the middle is to make sure those guys practice every day. I’m talking about the center, two guards, the quarterback and the halfback.”

The Seahawks are banking on the possibility that Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett - along with a smattering of second-year runner Justin Forsett – can add up to a backfield capable of revitalizing a running game that has sputtered for the past two seasons. They have 12 years of NFL experience between them yet only one 1,000-yard rushing season. Using multiple backs has become standard operating procedure around the league.

Things have been going well for third-year Carolina Panthers WR Dwayne Jarrett. Jarrett is off to a fast start in camp, fully realizing that this is a big year for him Jarrett had six catches as a rookie and 10 last season and the Panthers are anxious to see if he can be the team’s No. 2 receiver at some point in the future. Veteran Muhsin Muhammad, who turned 36 in May, is in the final year of his contract with the Panthers and the obvious hope is that Jarrett can be the guy who eventually takes his place. “I’m waiting for my chance,” Jarrett said.
