There’s a perfectly good reason Jay Cutler hasn’t been seen or heard doing commercial spots for car manufacturers, hotel chains or anything else. He’s not interested, at least not right now.
“With all the excitement that’s happened so far, there have been a lot of endorsement opportunities,” the Bears quarterback said. “But I’ve kind of steered clear of those because I haven’t even stepped on the field yet. I’m trying to take care of that before I step into that (other) realm.” He already is one of the most popular and recognizable athletes in a city with plenty of big-name players. But capitalizing on that popularity commercially isn’t an immediate priority for Cutler. “I want to go out and play some games and prove myself first,” Cutler said. “I want to get rid of some of the skepticism surrounding me and just go out there and play.”
Bears linebacker Jamar Williams impressed during organized team activities that he could push for significant playing time in 2009. Williams, who had five interceptions during OTAs, is capable of playing three positions. He’s the fourth linebacker in the rotation along with Urlacher, Lance Briggs and newcomer Pisa Tinoisamoa, ahead of Nick Roach and Hunter Hillenmeyer.
Zackary Bowman has had an eventful summer. Not only did the second-year defensive back shoot up the depth chart to the third cornerback with 12 interceptions during OTAs, he also got married last weekend. Although the Bears hope the injury bug doesn’t bite Charles Tillman and Nathan Vasher again, it will be good to have a healthy Bowman — whose rookie season came to an end following a biceps injury — as insurance.
