Jets top pick Mark Sanchez took a significant step by taking some reps with the first team and outshining Kellen Clemens Sunday. Sanchez completed 6-of-9 passes in 11-on-11 drills — mostly short, safe passes — during a rainy morning practice and was 6-of-17 with an interception in the afternoon session with the second-teamers.

“He’ll be getting more reps with the ‘1s’ as we go on,” coach Rex Ryan said. “He makes some throws that are hard to make. … Obviously, that’s one of the reasons that we jumped up and tried to go get him (in the draft).”

Clemens, meanwhile, continued his turnover-laden camp by going 7-of-14 with an interception in the morning and 4-of-9 with another interception in the second practice, giving him five picks in five practices.

Vernon Gholston is perhaps the biggest enigma on the Jets. He was the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft, freakishly athletic, but his lack of production, coupled with what some teammates perceive as a lack of fire, has made him a mystery man in his own locker room.

“He’s strong as hell, but the question is, does he want it?” said one player, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. He’s got talent, and he doesn’t lack confidence, but sometimes he’s like an 18-year-old kid who’s never played the game before.”

Kris Jenkins may be slower to return form his injured right calf than originally believed.

“It could be a little longer than I thought,” coach Rex Ryan said after Sunday’s morning practice. “Sometimes those calves are a little slower to heal.” Jenkins, who will be turn 30 Monday, spent the Sunday morning practice pedaling (slowly) on the stationary bike with a protective sleeve over his calf. “He certainly wants to be out there,” Ryan said. “He does make a huge difference. You can replace guys – and we have good football players – we’re deep at a lot of those positions. But there’s really only one Kris Jenkins. So it’s always good to get him back.”
