Saints WR Marques Colston (knee) should be at full speed by training camp and while he is not 100 percent yet, but he’s already “running around on the practice field” and looks like he will be fine for 2009. Injuries limited Colston to 11 games last season, and he turned in career lows in receptions, yards and touchdowns.
Plaxico Burress‘ immediate football future should be clarified three weeks from tomorrow at his next court appearance. If Burress manages to avoid jail time and a lengthy suspension from Goodell, then the Jets become serious about signing him. Players in Burress’ situation lack leverage to get much guaranteed money, so the Jets could probably get him without much of a financial commitment.
Browns receiver Josh Cribbs will report to voluntary minicamp today after skipping the first camp last week, his agent, J.R. Rickert, said in a text Monday night. Cribbs missed all three voluntary practices last week because he was waiting for the Browns to engage in “meaningful dialogue” regarding a new contract. “Josh Cribbs will report to practice on Tuesday,” Rickert said in the text. “He is making this good-faith effort to show everyone just how important this is to him. We will continue to communicate with the Browns on a regular basis and we are optimistic that there will be a fair solution.”
Former first-round pick Matt Jones, a free agent receiver who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, has been notified he will not be suspended as the result of his violation of a court-mandated drug program, his agent said. Jones was informed by the NFL last week that he will be fined $50,000 but not suspended.
Speaking at Tuesday’s organized team activities session, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said of veteran outside linebacker Greg Ellis: “It’s likely Greg will play somewhere else next year.” Jones spoke of his immense respect for Ellis and said his offseason complaining the last three years had nothing to do with his decision. Jones indicated that he’s given Ellis and his agent permission to speak to other teams, but a trade is unlikely given the fact that Ellis is on the books for $4.15 million in 2009.
During an interview with Alex Marvez of Sirius NFL Radio, Vikings defensive tackle Pat Williams said that he has told quarterback Tarvaris Jackson he needs to apply himself to reach his potential. “I talk to Tarvaris all the time, (and) tell him you have to put in the time,” Williams said. “This ain’t college no more. This is the NFL. You have to put in more time than you are used to putting in. If you are putting in four hours, you have to put in eight. You have to put in more time than what he’s doing. I think if he puts the right time in, he will be a great quarterback in the league.” Williams, who is involved in ongoing Starcaps litigation as he combats a four-game NFL suspension, also indicated that he recently sent a text message to Favre. “I told him if he comes we will open our arms to you and if you don’t we understand,” Williams said. “He’s a Hall of Famer and no one can take that from him. He’s still one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play.”
Dolphins CB Will Allen was given a two-year contract extension Tuesday that will pay him $16.2 million over the next three seasons, with $10 million guaranteed.
