Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett recently had a meeting with starting quarterback Tony Romo and he told Romo to get in better shape this offseason. The Cowboys believe Romo does not get into good enough shape in the offseason to stay sharp in the second half of the regular season.
Tony Romo denied any notion that he had been told to get into better shape by Garrett earlier in the week. Romo said, “If there’s anything those guys tell me, it’s to throttle back sometimes just because I do a lot of running playing soccer and basketball and stuff to stay in shape, plus the stuff we do.” He added that no such meeting occurred.
The Cowboys will now fine players $453 for every pound that they’re over their target weight when they report to training camp. In the past under Wade Phillips, who has drawn criticism for taking it too easy on the players, the Cowboys haven’t doled out much in the way fines. “I expect them to be in the best shape they’ve been in,” Phillips told reporters today. “That’s part of being accountable, not only to their teammates, but to themselves.”
INJURIES
WR Miles Austin has been sidelined with a hamstring injury the last three weeks of practice. Austin’s return to the field, as well as that of fellow wide receiver Sam Hurd, who has a quadriceps injury, will come inside the Alamodome when training camp starts July 29. “I want to be out there, obviously,” said Austin, who suffered two knee injuries last season and missed four games, “but at the end of the day I have to be ready for training camp when we’re getting ready for the season. With hamstrings, you never know. They’re going to be sore, but I want to be ready for everything going into camp.” Hurd said he is 100 percent and the team wants to keep him fresh for training camp. Both receivers have done running on the side during practices the last two weeks and in the first two days of this week’s mini-camp. “I’m a very competitive person, and it’s difficult watching,” Hurd said. “I’m ready now, but I’ll be really ready for training camp.”
K Nick Folk started jogging in his rehab from hip surgery and next week he moves up to kicking a volleyball. “Feels awesome,” Folk said. “I can’t complain. It’s more tired than anything else. It’s not like it’s sore, just tired.” Folk said he will return to Vail, Colo., on Saturday for a checkup with Dr. Marc Philippon, who performed the surgery. Folk will progress from a volleyball to a soccer ball to kicking off a tee and said he will be ready to go for training camp.
