Plaxico Burress

  • Raiders WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, said the hamstring that he injured during offseason workouts is at about “80” percent strength. He expects to be at 100 percent by the start of training camp. Heyward-Bey said he went through a lot of offseason drills despite not being at full strength to show coaches and teammates he could play through pain.
  • Vikings WR PercyHarvin reported for the start of the symposium Sunday afternoon but after notifying the medical staff that he was not feeling well, it was recommended that he return home. This is the second time Harvin has become ill after traveling this offseason. He missed the Vikings initial rookie minicamp in May when he was hospitalized for a virus and severe dehydration after vomiting on a flight from Florida to Atlanta on his way to Minnesota.
  • NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is leaning toward indefinitely suspending former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress and continuing to sideline quarterback Michael Vick, three sources with knowledge of the situations have indicated. Such moves would be the latest examples of Goodell’s tough stance on players embroiled in off-field issues as evidenced with the suspension of Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth earlier this month. Stallworth has been ruled out indefinitely by the league after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter in the death of a Miami man in March.

new kansas city chiefs stadium

  • Chiefs fans, take heart. The team may not be quite ready, but your new stadium is progressing toward completion, officials heard Monday. Jim Rowland, executive director of the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority, told the Jackson County Legislature that the stadium should be 70 percent complete for the Kansas City Chiefs’ opener, as planned. “Arrowhead is a flurry of activity, trying to get ready for the Aug. 15 opening,” Rowland said.
  • Steelers WR Santonio Holmesphysical remake, particularly around his neck and through his shoulders, is the next step in the development of the MVP of Super Bowl XLIII. The increase in Holmes’ upper body is becoming so pronounced that he’s beginning to look like an entirely different player. “I tipped the scales (Monday) at 201 (pounds),” Holmes said proudly following his workout at Tom Shaw Performance at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex.

  • The work ethic of Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell is still being questioned by many who have worked with him in the past and are working with him now. After he issued a call to his teammates to practice and finish the OTA days strong, he then disappeared and was AWOL on the last day. Russell must learn that talent alone is not going to make him successful.
  • Packers QB Matt Flynn is well ahead of QB Brian Brohm for the backup quarterback position. Flynn has an average arm at best but is a leader and has enough mobility to make some plays when things break down. Brohm is better than last year but still had too many head-scratching moments as well as a surprising number of ducks this summer.
  • Even though the Packers will dish out at least $16.25 million to receiver Greg Jennings this year, they should have enough room under the salary cap for additional contract extensions. The deal that Jennings signed on Wednesday left the Packers with about $21 million in remaining space under the 2009 salary cap. The Packers will need some of their remaining salary-cap room for their four remaining unsigned draft picks which includes first-round picks B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews as well as extending the contracts of additional veterans like disgruntled safety Nick Collins, starting offensive linemen Daryn Colledge, Jason Spitz and linebacker Aaron Kampman who are entering their final contract years.
  • The Jets are very much taking a wait-and-see approach with Plaxico Burress. Word out of New York is that they won’t consider bringing him aboard until his legal situation is cleared up, and it’s also unlikely they would make a play for him if Roger Goodell hands down a lengthy suspension. However, should the courts and league decide in the receiver’s favor, expect the Jets to be near the top of the list of suitors.
  • After multiple discussions about the possibility of the Chicago Bears signing free agent receiver Plaxico Burress, it now seems unlikely. ESPN’s John Clayton reports that Chicago has all but ruled out the possibility of singing Burress. Part of that stance could be based on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s decision to review Burress for possible league discipline long before his legal troubles are scheduled to be addressed in court. Clayton also said that the Jets are pretty much in the same boat, and it doesn’t look like anyone will sign Burress before the start of training camp. The Buccaneers reported the same sentiment on Saturday.

Buccaneers Tailgate Insider – Monday June 29

by Joe Tailgate on June 29, 2009

in NFL News

Cadillac Williams is recovering from his second torn patellar tendon in as many seasons but unlike last year, when he tore the patellar tendon in his left knee, the tendon did not rupture. Instead, it tore away from the bone, making the prognosis for a full recovery much shorter. There’s a chance Williams might be cleared to practice sometime in the preseason, but most likely he will begin the year again on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

General Manager Mark Dominik indicated the team has no interest in signing former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress at this time. The Bucs are looking for receviers to back up starters Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton.

“We’re going to let Brian Clark, Maurice Stovall and even Dexter Jackson compete and go from there,” Dominik said.

Dominik said he expects linebacker Barrett Ruud to report on time. Dominik maintained his policy of not publicly discussing negotiations. Ruud did attend the team’s mandatory minicamp.

“You saw some little things (he missed), but his instincts took over,” Dominik said of Ruud. “Barrett is a very smart football player. He can pick it up on a chalkboard. A lot of players have to do it on the field. His coaches did a nice job of keeping him up to date with what we were doing.”

Josh Freeman will not be the starting quarterback this season, not right away at least.

“The ultimate goal is to let Josh Freeman sit back and learn,” Dominik said Saturday.

A few weeks ago quarterbacks coach Greg Olson suggested that at his current pace, Freeman might begin the season as the Bucs’ starting quarterback. Dominik hasn’t completely ruled it out, but it’s clear the plan is not to rush Freeman into the huddle.

“I still think he’s a 21-year-old quarterback who came out as a true junior,” Dominik said of Freeman. “You’d like for him to grow and mature into his role and not be forced into it.”

What is the Story with Plax?

by Joe Tailgate on June 16, 2009

in NFL News

Where will Plaxico Burress end up in 2009? Prison, the Jets, Bucs, Bears? This, in my opinion, is more interesting than trying to figure out what Brett Favre will do. Burress recently had his gun case delayed until Sept. 23, so it’s not completely out of the question that Plax gets to play a full season in 2009. His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, told reporters that he doesn’t Roger Goodell will suspend Burress until the case is finsihed. And of course his agent, Drew Rosenhaus agrees.

“Our hope is, based on this information, that he’ll be able to play unobstructed this year, without having a trial and he can get a season in and then deal with the legal issues after the season,” Rosenhaus told Miami television WSVN-TV. “This is our hope, and this is what I’m communicating to the rest of the NFL teams.”

Newark Star-Ledger

OK, so if he gets to play next year where will it be? As I can gather it’s pretty much down to 3 teams.

New York Jets – My boys in Jersey haven’t had a WR like Burress since Keyshawn Johnson was in kelly green. A tall guy that you can just flip the ball in the air to and he will go and get it. Just ask Eli Manning how nice it was. Rumor has it that NY has cooled off on the idea of picking this cat up.

Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger is hearing that the Jets feel that their collective group of wide receivers are good enough to get the job done. Besides, it’s still only June and the organization will keep its options open at the wide receiver position. “Consistent with our philosophy, we will continue to do our due diligence with any and all free agents that are available now and in the future,” the Jets said in a statement

The Star-Ledger

Do the Jets need Plax? Yes they do. Let’s not forget how much they were in LOVE with the 3 QB options on the team. Then they drafted Mark Sanchez. Nothing against the stock of WRs NY has now, but bringing in Burress will give the Jets an actual # 1 WR. Jerricho Cotchery, Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney, Brad Smith  and Wallace Wright are the top options at WR right now. Wide Receivers coach Henry Ellard believes they have what it takes to get the job done.

“Yeah, we would love to have him because he adds to what we already have,” Ellard said of Burress. “But, if it came down to it, I think we’ll be fine with what we already have. We’re a little short on experience, but that’s going to come with time.”

It’s nice to have confidence in your players, and I’m sure they will be halfway decent. Chansi Stuckey started out 2008 pretty well, David Clowney showed flashes of his speed in pre-season, and Wright is an outstanding special teams player, but this won’t be enough, contrary to what Wright says…

“We don’t think we need him,” Wright said. “I’m just going to be straight-up honest with you. We feel like we’re a strength on this team. We feel we have it right in our room. We don’t need anybody coming in, and we don’t need anybody coming out.”

IMO the Jets go after Plax, and get him. Burress stays in NY in 2009. But hold on just one damn second. 2 other teams still want this dude. The Bears and Bucs remain.

Chicago Bears -The Bears need a WR, I don’t care what anybody says. And you Bears fans can blast me all you want. Face the facts, your receivers suck. Last month we did a write-up on the suckiness of Chicago’s Wideouts. And couldn’t understand why Bears GM Jerry Angelo would not pursue Burress. Before Chicago added themselves to the Burress sweepstakes, Angelo spoke about the possiblilty of being 1 of the 2 teams interested in Plax. Pretty simple,

Are we one of those two teams? No,” Angelo said.

But he has since changed his tune, maybe because he saw that Yahoo! ranked his WR’s the worst of all time. Now he says…

”I can’t say that it’s 50-50 or anything like that,” he told the team’s Web site. ”We plan on going into training camp with what we have right now.”

Chicago Sun Times

I think you need a new plan. Granted, the team is more focused on the run with Matt Forte. But with the lack of talent at the WR position, having Jay Cutler will be no better than having Kyle Orton. Not that Orton was bad, but he had no one to throw the ball to.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The Bucs are the third team thrown into the mix. And probably the least likely to sign Burress. It seems Tampa Bay may be losing interest in Burress. Head Coach Raheem Morris sounds a lot like a guy who would like to have Burress on his team but, there is a feeling inside Buccaneers headquarters that adding Burress may be a step in the wrong direction.

Plaxico Burress is deathly afraid of going to jail. Bob Papa, one of the hosts of Sirius NFL Radio’s The Opening Drive, spoke on the subject today. “This is what I’ve been told and what I’ve heard,” Papa said on the air. “They worked out something where they had it down to about a three-month jail term with actually only two months served and about 1,500 hours of community service. And I think his lawyers felt that they had a pretty good deal. He doesn’t want to go to jail at all. He shot down the deal. He does not want to go to jail at all. So now coming up in another couple of weeks we’re gonna find out what’s gonna happen. But my guess is that the city of New York is not gonna back off any kind of jail time. “Evidently, he’s gonna have to go to Ryker’s Island,” Papa added. “He’s deathly afraid of going. If he would have just taken the deal when it originally was offered it would all be over with by now. But supposedly the community service hours and the jail time are not appealing to him. He does not understand that he is not in any kind of position of leverage. He has no leverage. He, not his representatives, he thinks he has leverage.”

Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin, who has been at odds with the team regarding his contract and had expressed a desire to be traded, did not attend Wednesday’s voluntary organized team activities at the club’s Tempe training facility, and coach Ken Whisenhunt said it was unclear whether anything has changed.

Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin was working at both the X and Z receiver positions. During the post-draft mini-camp, he primarily played the X spot but his repertoire is increasing as the camps go on. He has also spent some time inside at the slot as well.

Packers WR Donald Driver has been MIA lately because he wants the team to sweeten his contract. Driver, 34, has two years remaining on his contract, which calls for a $3.9 million base salary this season and a $4 million base salary in 2010.

Colts CB Marlin Jackson remains on the fast track to recover from a knee injury that ended his 2008 season. “I’ve been blessed so far being able to heal up faster than everybody thought I would,” said Jackson, who tore two ligaments in his right knee, during an Oct. 29 practice.
