- The New York Giants may have lost a pair of veteran wide receivers, but the team believes quarterback Eli Manning will be able to make up the different with experience, the New York Post reported. “We’re going to put more of the onus on him,” Giants GM Jerry Reese said. And how did Manning respond? “I think you got a quarterback going into his sixth year and . . . some young receivers,” Manning told The Post Tuesday. “It’s my job to make sure those guys are on the same page and my job to be a leader and take control of the offense and the passing game. “As a quarterback you’re always going to be a leader, but now I’m one of the older guys on the offense.”
- Free agent RB Edgerrin James‘ agent, Drew Rosenhaus posted on his Twitter page that James has been training hard and as a result is in great shape. “I can tell you that Edgerrin James is in great playing shape. He weighs 216lbs and is training hard. He is excited about this season!”
- The Redskins drafted Kevin Barnes in the third round out of Maryland to compete with Fred Smoot at nickel corner, and the local product was impressive during OTAs, snagging several interceptions and winning the defense’s competition on the final day of the practices with four picks. Barnes projects confidence and immediately declared he was ready to compete with anybody on the roster, and his size may help him match up against some bigger wide receivers in the NFC East. But Barnes is coming off of an injury, and he’ll have to prove himself in the preseason.

- Texans Wide receiver Kevin Walter put together a career season in 2008, finishing with 60 catches for 899 yards and eight touchdowns. He was a fantasy football goldmine. This season, he plans to boost those stats by increasing his yards after the catch. “Each year I have improved. Last year, I worked on my yards after the catch and I think I continue to do a better job with that. This year, I really want to work on my stiff arm and other moves that get you a few more yards after the catch. Once you get the ball in your hands, you have to do something special with it. Obviously, protecting the ball is the most important thing; turnovers can change the momentum of a game. But I do want to improve my yards after the catch.”
- In the weeks following the Falcons trade for 10-time Pro Bowler Tony Gonzalez few details emerged on how he’ll integrate into the team’s offense. He’ll catch passes, but the Falcons built the offense around Pro Bowl running back Michael Turner. ”Tony will help our offense in a number of ways,” Mularkey said at the close of June organized team activities. “One thing he’s going to do is that he’s a productive blocker and that’s important in our offense… As successful as he’s been as a receiver, he’s a good blocker too and he really doesn’t get the credit that he should.” At 6-foot-5 and 251 pounds, Gonzalez has size to push people around but his ability to shake defenders and soft hands made him the most prolific pass catcher at his position. “If you double team somebody, someone’s going to get open,” Gonzalez said. “If it’s one-on-one, we have to get open. Do I think I’ll catch 100 balls? I don’t have to. This is something we’re all going to work together on. I’ve been fortunate to have such a good career. It’s not about breaking records and all that stuff. It’s about going out there and moving those chains… I’m going to help those guys. I feel like I’ve got some stuff they can learn and I’m going to learn from them. I don’t mind putting in the work, I never have, and hopefully they feel the same way I do.”

Redskins head coach Jim Zorn wants one of his highly-touted second-year WRs, Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, to become a starter outside, moving veteran Antwaan Randle El to the slot position. Thomas and Kelly combined for just 18 catches in disappointing rookie seasons that began with them failing the conditioning test that opened training camp. Thomas might have the inside track this year since he’s faster, played more last year and was able to practice the entire offseason while Kelly wasn’t on the field until June as he recovered from a second knee surgery in five months.
The Redskins have bolstered their defense with signings and high draft picks, including the free agent acquisition of middle linebacker London Fletcher and the selection of Miami product Rocky McIntosh, both of whom enter this season slated as starters. The linebacker corps could be a major strength, but also somewhat of a question mark, with injuries and inexperience placing the group in a “worth keeping an eye on” category…especially the strong side linebacker position. If the season opened today the starters would be: Rocky McIntosh, London Fletcher and Brian Orakpo, a unit that could be explosive and one of the strengths of a defense that finished ranked fourth in the NFL last season

Last year Todd Collins struggled in the preseason as he learned Jim Zorn’s hybrid West Coast offense. But like Jason Campbell and Colt Brennan, Collins has had a year in the system and entering the second year of a three-year deal valued at $9 million, will look to remain entrenched as the insurance policy should Campbell go down. If Brennan were to beat Collins out for the job, however, it’d be difficult to see the Redskins keeping a third-string quarterback with a $3 million per year price tag.
Rookie quarterback Chase Daniel “raised eyebrows” during some of the final Redskins OTAs and has a shot at earning the Redskings number three quarterback position. Daniel is currently fourth in line behind Jason Campbell, Colt Brennan and Todd Collins, but was apparently impressive and could convince the team to release Collins if he plays well in training camp.

- The Packers and WR Greg Jennings are close to agreeing to a new deal, the veteran wide receiver said Monday after minicamp practice. Jennings warned that a breakdown was still possible. Nevertheless, this was the first time he had publicly been so optimistic about a potential new contract with the team since he began seeking a new deal at the conclusion of the 2008 season. “We’ve been working on some things. We’re coming pretty close, as far as my understanding is, to some type of a deal,” Jennings said. “But when I say close, we could still be far . . . if that makes sense. But I think we’re coming close. You just never know how long ‘close’ can take to actually closing the deal.”
- The Packers look like they’re planning to get Ryan Pickett and B.J. Raji on the field together as much as they can. When the Packers drafted Raji with the No. 9 overall pick in April, they talked of moving one of the two behemoth defensive tackles to play some end in their new 3-4 defensive scheme, and in offseason practices they’ve done it. When both players have been present, they’ve lined up with the No. 1 base defense: Pickett exclusively at nose tackle and Raji at defensive end.

- Redskins RB Clinton Portis claims that there is no bad blood between him and coach Jim Zorn. “How this story came about, I have no idea,” Portis said. “There’s nothing going on. There’s no beef between me and Coach Zorn. We’re on good terms at this present moment. There’s no problem.” Portis had a spat with Zorn after the coach benched him at halftime of the Dec. 7 loss at Baltimore. “I don’t know why people have that in their mind,” Portis said. “Me and Coach [Joe] Gibbs had a great relationship. We talked more than me and Coach Zorn do, but lately me and Coach Zorn been talking, trying to get on the same page. Things been going good. He understand me and I understand him.”
- Bengals QB Carson Palmer reiterated that WR Chad Ochocinco remains his top target within the team’s offense. “He’s going to play (the lead role) because he deserves to play there,” Palmer said. “He’s been one of the best receivers in this league for a long time. He’s still able to play at that level, and still capable of making big plays and carrying the load offensively at the receiver spot, so he will.”
- How serious is Cowboys WR Roy Williams taking his new job as the No. 1 receiver? For the first time in his life, or so one of Williams’ unnamed buddies told SI.com’s Peter King. “I’m serious,” King quoted his source. “Roy never lifted before. Now that he has, and now that he’s serious about making himself a great football player, especially with T.O. gone, I think he’s really going to have a good year.” Strength and conditioning coach Joe Juraszek said earlier in June that Williams has been hard at work this offseason to slim down and get himself in better shape for the year.
