Linebacker Shawne Merriman is displeased with his tender offer from the Chargers, according to his personal twitter page. He said, “Speechless today. Business is business but some things just are not right.” Merriman is not eligible to hit free agency, and a team would have to give up a first and third-round draft pick to acquire him away from the Chargers.

Marc Buger’s agent waiting on decision from Rams

There are talks occurring between the Rams and quarterback Marc Bulger’s agents to decide his fate sooner rather than later but there is no urgency to make a move prior to March 5th because there are no salary-cap implications to having Bulger on or off the roster. Because no trade can be consummated until March 5th, the Rams would only release him prior to that date if they have exhausted all potential efforts to deal him.

Around The NFL for Wednesday February 3 2010

Michael Vick wants to be a starting quarterback in the NFL, but that might not happen next season. And contrary to popular belief, the Philadelphia Eagles plan on keeping Vick in 2010, NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi reported Tuesday. “They have no intention this offseason of trading Michael Vick,” Lombardi said on NFL Network’s NFL Total Access. “Many people around the league feel like that’s a lot of false bravado, (and) they’re going to release him, because he has a ($1.5 million) roster bonus due in March. Not the case.”

Patriots receiver Wes Welker underwent surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. Welker was waiting and waiting to have surgery. The surgery was performed by Thomas Gill, the team doctor for the Patriots and colleague Karen Guregian was told the surgery was a grand success.

Post image for Texans Tailgate Insider – Steve Slaton, Owen Daniels, DeMeco Ryans

Running back Steve Slaton is showing every bit of the tremendous rushing and receiving skills in practice that he displayed last season. Slaton ranked second in the AFC last season with 1,282 yards on 268 carries, and also caught 50 passes for 377 yards. He’d like to have about 20 touches a game, and would have no problem if half were pass receptions. “I warm up, the more I touch the ball,” he said. Slaton reported to camp at about 224 pounds, 9 pounds heavier than he was last year, but figures that most of it will be gone by the end of camp.

  • The New York Giants may have lost a pair of veteran wide receivers, but the team believes quarterback Eli Manning will be able to make up the different with experience, the New York Post reported. “We’re going to put more of the onus on him,” Giants GM Jerry Reese said. And how did Manning respond? “I think you got a quarterback going into his sixth year and . . . some young receivers,” Manning told The Post Tuesday. “It’s my job to make sure those guys are on the same page and my job to be a leader and take control of the offense and the passing game. “As a quarterback you’re always going to be a leader, but now I’m one of the older guys on the offense.”
  • Free agent RB Edgerrin James‘ agent, Drew Rosenhaus posted on his Twitter page that James has been training hard and as a result is in great shape. “I can tell you that Edgerrin James is in great playing shape. He weighs 216lbs and is training hard. He is excited about this season!”
  • The Redskins drafted Kevin Barnes in the third round out of Maryland to compete with Fred Smoot at nickel corner, and the local product was impressive during OTAs, snagging several interceptions and winning the defense’s competition on the final day of the practices with four picks. Barnes projects confidence and immediately declared he was ready to compete with anybody on the roster, and his size may help him match up against some bigger wide receivers in the NFC East. But Barnes is coming off of an injury, and he’ll have to prove himself in the preseason.

  • Texans Wide receiver Kevin Walter put together a career season in 2008, finishing with 60 catches for 899 yards and eight touchdowns. He was a fantasy football goldmine. This season, he plans to boost those stats by increasing his yards after the catch. “Each year I have improved. Last year, I worked on my yards after the catch and I think I continue to do a better job with that. This year, I really want to work on my stiff arm and other moves that get you a few more yards after the catch. Once you get the ball in your hands, you have to do something special with it. Obviously, protecting the ball is the most important thing; turnovers can change the momentum of a game. But I do want to improve my yards after the catch.”
  • In the weeks following the Falcons trade for 10-time Pro Bowler Tony Gonzalez few details emerged on how he’ll integrate into the team’s offense. He’ll catch passes, but the Falcons built the offense around Pro Bowl running back Michael Turner. ”Tony will help our offense in a number of ways,” Mularkey said at the close of June organized team activities. “One thing he’s going to do is that he’s a productive blocker and that’s important in our offense… As successful as he’s been as a receiver, he’s a good blocker too and he really doesn’t get the credit that he should.” At 6-foot-5 and 251 pounds, Gonzalez has size to push people around but his ability to shake defenders and soft hands made him the most prolific pass catcher at his position. “If you double team somebody, someone’s going to get open,” Gonzalez said. “If it’s one-on-one, we have to get open. Do I think I’ll catch 100 balls? I don’t have to. This is something we’re all going to work together on. I’ve been fortunate to have such a good career. It’s not about breaking records and all that stuff. It’s about going out there and moving those chains… I’m going to help those guys. I feel like I’ve got some stuff they can learn and I’m going to learn from them. I don’t mind putting in the work, I never have, and hopefully they feel the same way I do.”

Texans owner Bob McNair, general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak left the Methodist Training Center knowing they have more talent than at any time in the team’s eight-year history. They also know fans have playoffs-or-bust expectations.

The playoffs are why I came here,” Kubiak said. “It’s why I do what I do. “We have high expectations. We’re a better team than any time since I’ve been here. We’re not going to be satisfied with another (8-8 record). I want more, a lot more. The players do, too. I’m looking forward to the journey because I like the guys I’m taking it with. We have tremendous character on this team.”

Houston will have at least two new starters on defense in left end Antonio Smith and strong-side linebacker Brian Cushing, their first-round draft choice out of USC.

Rookies have to be big contributors to our team, but I don’t imagine you’re going to see three or four of them starting because we’re a better team,” Kubiak said. “Cushing has been a starter since the day he stepped off the bus. We’re very happy with him.”

Second-year LB Xavier Adibi, recovering Zach Diles and newcomer Cato June are expected to slug it out for the third starting spot alongside middle man DeMeco Ryans and rookie strongside linebacker Brian Cushing.

With Adibi and Zach and Cato, we’re as strong at that position as we’ve been since I’ve been here,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “That position group will have a heck of a battle this training camp,” GM Rick Smith said. “That’s one I’m looking forward to watching.”

Owen-Daniels-Grumpy

Owen Daniels signed a one-year tender with the Texans over the weekend but did not show up for the team’s mandatory mini-camp on Monday. Most of the veterans are not required to attend the three days of practices, but they must go through strength and conditioning workouts at the stadium.

I think everyone understands the rules,” general manager Rick Smith said. “I’m not going to talk about our conversations, but I think everyone understands that it’s a mandatory mini-camp and that everyone is supposed to be here. We have a lot of goals for the football team this season. And every time you are with your teammates, you are getting better. From that standpoint, I think he would have been better served being here today lifting and meeting with his teammates.” Daniels could receive a fine for his absence. “This is a mandatory mini-camp, so there are ramifications for him not being here today,” Smith said.
